Industrial style refers to an aesthetic that takes its cues from old factories and incorporates elements such as weathered woods, exposed brick, industrial lighting and raw materials. Its palette is commonly rooted in earth tones – a mix of muted greys, neutrals and rustic colours. Inspired by Thorold’s rural locale, designer Dominic De Freitas and his team fused this aesthetic with the relaxed, family-focused feel of a modern farmhouse.

To Create Your Own Interpretation of This Look, Consider These Tips From Dominic:

  • Authenticity is key. Don’t over-stage your home; keep it casual and think about how you truly live. When hosting a family-style gathering, consider stacking dishes for easy use and a casual feel.
  • In lieu of closed cabinet storage, create displays out of the items you use and treasure most. In the kitchen, pots and pans on an open Baker’s Rack communicate a love for cooking and make the space feel more open and welcoming.
  • On the same note, neutral walls in a darker hue can also make a space feel larger; this is because the edges of where the wall starts and stops can be harder to see. The muted grey colour that Dominic and his team selected for the Industrial Ranch kitchen is the perfect backdrop for copper, steel and glass accents.
  • Traditionally, farmhouse designs relied heavily on simple wooden furniture to fill up the bulk of their interiors; include this design trick in your space as well. The type of wood and finish you choose is up to you, but whenever possible, opt for pieces that feature clean, simple lines.
  • A classic trestle table or farmhouse dining table is an easy way to embrace this look, especially in a hand-hewn finish or reclaimed wood. Industrial Ranch is all about that perfectly imperfect look: handcrafted and rustic.
  • The best accents are the ones that also play a functional role, so look for pieces that serve a purpose. This includes iron-inspired light fixtures, galvanized metal stools or hand-woven storage baskets.
  • The brick wall feature in the family room adds warmth to a large open space. The natural character of the building material also adds interest and creates a natural focal point
