Fall has arrived and it’s time to prepare your home for the winter months. An important factor of maintaining your home is making sure your furnace is running in tip top shape. Regular filter changes are important for optimal performance of your furnace system and helps keep the air in your home clean for healthier living.
A forced air furnace draws air into the heat exchanger and forces it through your homes ventilation system. Your furnace filter protects the blower motor from any hair, debris and filters the air before it gets distributed throughout your home.
A clogged filter can cause your furnace to malfunction. It is recommended to replace your furnace filter every two months. Your furnace filter is rated for efficiency and is rated on a scale from 1 to 16. This scale is called the Merv Rating. When choosing a furnace filter it is recommended to look for a Merv Rating of 9, as this average rating will allow adequate air flow to be filtered. Before replacing your furnace filter, remember to shut off the power to the furnace and restore power when finished.
Empire Communities Home Orientation Specialist Stefano Corvine explains how to clean your furnace filter in a few easy steps:
Your furnace is covered for two year warranty from Tarion. You do run the risk of breaching that warranty by installing a humidifier, an air cleaner, an air conditioner or by changing your thermostat. We highly recommend contacting an HVAC qualified technician before making any changes.
