Texas’ Best Food? Find It at the 2018 State Fair

Tags: Foodie, Houston

There are two reasons to head to Fair Park in Dallas in October — the Texas/OU game (Longhorns took the game in a spectacular 48-45 nail-biter this year) and the State Fair of Texas. Specifically for the food; and with only a few days left to indulge, you’re opportunity to eat your way to foodie oblivion is dwindling.

The ever-present, ever-reliable Fletcher’s Corn Dogs is worth the long line (and it does move pretty fast), but we recommend leaving lots of room to sample the 2018 Big Tex Choice Award Winners, given every year to showcase the tasty and most decadent creations that will elevate your concept of fair food.

Here are this year’s winners:

Best Taste – Savory

Fernie’s Hoppin’ John Cake with Jackpot Sauce by Winter Family Concessions – Creamy black-eyed peas, fluffy white rice, spicy smoked sausage, aromatic green onions and a secret blend of spices are combined with breadcrumbs and eggbeaters to form a generous Texas-sized cake. This savory cake is breaded, deep fried and topped with a zingy black-eyed pea relish, garnished with pickled okra and served with a side of Jackpot Sauce.

Best Taste – Sweet

Arroz con Leche (Sweet Crispy Rice) by Garza Family- A cinnamon-spiced rice ball is formed, battered and coated in crispy puffed rice cereal. The ball is then deep fried to golden perfection. Each rice ball is sprinkled with powdered vanilla and complemented with a Texas-sized scoop of vanilla ice cream. To serve, a drizzle of caramel sauce and powdered cinnamon crowns each tasty treat.

Most Creative

Cotton Candy Taco by Justin and Rudy Martinez- A graham cracker waffle cone is freshly pressed into a crunchy taco shell shape and coated with a marshmallow glaze, then stuffed with chocolate, toasted marshmallow and organic cane sugar cotton candy. It’s then topped off with chocolate cookie crumbles and two chocolate cream-covered biscuit sticks with marshmallows.

The finalists are worth a mention (and a bite for that matter). They include Deep Fried Shepherd’s Pie, Texas Fried Hill Country fried green tomato sandwich, the Texas Twang-Kie, Deep Fried Skillet Potato Melt in a Boat, Fernie’s Orange You Glad We Fried It turnover, State Fair Fun-L Cake Ice Cream and Sweet Bakin’ Bacon.

And of course, there are plenty of rides, live music and animals, but the food is what really cooks at this Texas-sized event to enjoy.
